The cover of 'Fireside Carols' by The Golden Eggs. Best Christmas Album 2009!

Fireside Carols, the first cd released by TheGoldenEggs, is one of the most unusual Christmas albums of recent years. Growing out of a friendship between six of Bath’s most talented young professional musicians, and quite literally recorded around the fire in a Bath living room, this natural, warm and happy collaboration has followed the instincts of the people involved to arrive at a innovative collection of familiar carols in a wide and refreshing range of moods.

Some tracks, like Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly and The Twelve Days of Christmas, reflect the light-hearted humour and cheerfulness of Christmas; other traditional melodies, like We Three Kings and the Carol of the Bells, have inspired new instrumental arrangements full of joy and energy. Still others, like The Darkest Midnight of December, O Come O Come Emmanuel, and God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, are not afraid to explore the darker moments of a mid-winter season, and catch perfectly the waiting silence of a time in which hope and salvation are yet to be born.

But despite its variety the album as a whole has its own distinct voice, its characteristic blend of sensitivity and vigour, a musicality which is both inspired and infectious, and makes this new group one to watch.

Original arrangements are by Jools Scott and Beth Porter. The carols are sung and played by Jools, (piano, accordion, glockenspiel, vocals) Beth, (cello, recorder, vocals),Tim Petherick, (guitar, vocals) Pete Gibbs, (double bass, vocals) Nick Malcolm,(trumpet, vocals) and Graeme Smith (vocals, clarinet, saxophone)

All of the musicians involved are familiar figures around Bath; Jools Scott, as well as being an award-winning composer, is the resident pianist at the pump rooms, and a member of The Duckworths, Beth Porter is a session player, vocalist, song-writer, and cellist who plays with The Cedar, Babel, Jane Taylor, Rob Sharples and Rosie Garrard,String Beans sting quartet and the Inu folk band. Graeme Smith, Tim Petherick and Pete Gibbs play for The Mandibles, Nick Malcolm, while playing mainly for the Quintet Five Spot, works with many brass and jazz groups all around the area.
